Meet Christopher B. Dort
California Trial Attorney | Serious Personal Injury | Civil Litigation | Veterans’ Advocacy
Christopher B. Dort is licensed to practice law in California and admitted to the United States District Courts for the Northern, Eastern, and Southern Districts of California, as well as the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. He is also accredited by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to represent veterans pursuing disability benefits.
With more than 25 years of legal experience, Christopher brings a substantial trial-advocacy background to civil litigation and serious criminal cases. His experience extends from jury trials and appeals to arbitration, mediation, injunction proceedings, and negotiated settlements.
Today, Christopher primarily represents plaintiffs and claimants in serious personal injury cases. His practice includes claims arising from dangerous property conditions, automobile and bicycle collisions, unsafe rental housing, and insurance disputes. He also accepts selected matters representing defendants, drawing on his extensive background in insurance defense and government tort litigation.
Earlier in his career, Christopher defended individuals, businesses, insurance carriers, city governments, school districts, law enforcement officers, attorneys, and airlines. His experience on both sides of litigation informs his understanding of how claims are investigated, defended, valued, and ultimately decided.
Through the Law Office of Christopher Dort and the DortLaw brand, he combines careful preparation, direct communication, and practical judgment in representing people facing serious injuries and other consequential legal problems.
Education and Advocacy Training
Christopher earned his Juris Doctor from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, graduating with the Class of 1998. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Politics from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
At Hastings, he earned membership on the Hastings Constitutional Law Quarterly through a writing competition. He participated in moot court and was later appointed to the Moot Court Board. His law-school work helped establish a foundation in legal research, persuasive writing, oral argument, and the close analysis of legal issues.
His subsequent training at the Santa Cruz County Public Defender’s Office and established civil defense firms added practical courtroom and litigation experience to that academic foundation.
AV Rated Insurance Defense Experience
Before developing his current plaintiff-focused practice, Christopher worked at AV-rated defense firms representing insurers, public agencies, businesses, and professionals. That background provided extensive training in the preparation and defense of complex civil cases, including personal injury claims and government tort litigation.
At an AV-rated government tort defense firm in Santa Cruz, CA, Christopher represented insurance carriers, government agencies, and other institutional clients. His defense work included representing city governments, school districts, law enforcement officers, attorneys, and airlines in California Superior Courts and federal district court.
He later worked for another AV-rated firm based in San Diego, and Los Angeles representing transportation agencies as insurance defense counsel and handling litigation in the busy courts of Southern California, including Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego.
During this work, Mr. Dort appeared and handled serious cases in all of California’s major superior courts, including Los Angeles County, Sacramento County, San Diego County, Ventrua County, San Francisco County, Yolo County, Alameda County, Marin County, Placer County, Nevada County, El Dorado County and nearly every superior court in between.
The “AV” Defense designation is part of Martindale-Hubbell’s peer-review rating system, which evaluates legal ability and ethical standards. Christopher’s experience at these firms placed him in demanding litigation environments where thorough preparation, sound judgment, and disciplined case evaluation were essential.
He now brings that defense perspective to his work primarily representing injured people and their families. It gives him insight into the evidence defense counsel seek, the weaknesses insurers examine, the role of expert testimony, and the factors that influence settlement decisions. He continues to apply that experience when accepting selected defense matters.
A Foundation in Serious Criminal Trials
Christopher’s trial training began at the Santa Cruz County Public Defender’s Office, where he worked from 1996 through 1999, first during law school and later as an attorney.
Early in his career, he served as second chair in three murder trials alongside experienced trial attorneys before completing his first solo jury trial. Those experiences provided a demanding foundation in courtroom advocacy, witness examination, and the preparation necessary to present a case to a jury.
His training included trial preparation, selecting and drafting jury instructions, evaluating evidence, and cross-examining law enforcement officers. Although his practice now focuses primarily on civil claims for injured people, he continues to handle a limited number of serious criminal matters, including firearms-related cases.
Civil Litigation: From Investigation Through Trial and Appeal
Christopher has handled cases in at least 25 California county superior courts. His experience includes litigation in Los Angeles, Orange County, San Francisco, San Diego, Sacramento, Fresno, and Alameda County, as well as courts throughout Northern California and the Central Coast.
His civil litigation work has included investigating claims, taking and defending depositions, selecting and working with expert witnesses, evaluating damages, preparing motions, seeking and opposing injunctions, negotiating settlements, and presenting cases at trial. He also has experience handling appeals.
In 2002, Christopher successfully defended a roofing company in an Orange County jury trial involving a construction-negligence claim seeking more than $1 million in damages arising from the destruction of a maritime museum. The case required the presentation of technical evidence and a focused defense of the allegations concerning the company’s work.
His work has also included claims involving injuries sustained by an arrestee and litigation against public entities. Having represented both public-entity defendants and individuals bringing claims against government agencies, Christopher understands the importance of examining these disputes from both perspectives.
His government tort background is particularly useful in these cases, which involve procedural requirements and liability issues distinct from ordinary disputes between private parties.
Finding and Selecting the Right Experts
Christopher considers identifying and selecting the right expert witnesses one of the most important parts of building a successful case. In serious injury and complex civil litigation, the evidence often requires more than a description of what happened. A case may depend on explaining why a condition was dangerous, how an injury occurred, whether an exposure caused an illness, or what future care and financial losses a client faces.
His insurance defense background provided extensive training in selecting experts, evaluating their opinions, preparing them for deposition and trial, and examining the experts retained by opposing parties. He brings that experience to his current work primarily representing injured people and their families.
Christopher looks beyond credentials alone. He evaluates whether an expert has the right experience for the particular issue, uses a sound methodology, examines unfavorable evidence honestly, and can explain technical subjects clearly to a judge, arbitrator, or jury. He also considers whether the expert’s work will withstand scrutiny in deposition and cross-examination.
Selecting the right experts—and involving them at the right stage—can be pivotal to proving liability, establishing medical causation, documenting damages, and positioning a case for meaningful settlement negotiations or trial. Christopher treats that process as a central part of case preparation, not an afterthought.
Serious Personal Injuries and Unsafe Property Conditions
The primary focus of Christopher’s current practice is representing people who have suffered serious injuries. His work includes personal injury and premises liability claims arising from dangerous roads and property conditions, automobile and bicycle collisions, and unsafe rental housing.
He represents tenants and families dealing with water intrusion, persistent dampness, mold contamination, and other alleged substandard housing conditions. These cases can involve overlapping claims for physical injury, damaged belongings, displacement, additional living expenses, loss of use, and interference with the enjoyment of a home.
His experience includes matters involving respiratory symptoms, allergic reactions, skin conditions, and other claimed effects of unhealthy living environments. He understands the importance of developing the medical and expert evidence needed to evaluate whether a particular condition caused or contributed to a client’s injuries.
Christopher also represents claimants in automobile insurance matters, including uninsured and underinsured motorist claims. His work includes addressing settlement terms, coordinating related claims, and evaluating reimbursement demands and liens that may affect a client’s recovery.
Representing Injured Children and Their Families
Claims involving children require attention not only to the underlying injury, but also to the procedures designed to protect a minor’s interests.
Christopher has substantial experience with guardian ad litem appointments and petitions for court approval of settlements of minors’ claims. His work includes addressing settlement allocations, attorney-fee requests, medical reimbursement issues, and arrangements for protecting a child’s settlement proceeds.
He helps families navigate these requirements while keeping the child’s interests central to the process.
Arbitration, Mediation, and Selected Defense Matters
Christopher’s experience includes arbitration, mediation, and direct settlement negotiations, as well as courtroom litigation and appeals.
While he now primarily represents plaintiffs and claimants in serious personal injury matters, he also represents defendants in selected civil litigation and arbitration cases. These matters may involve contracts, business obligations, disputed payments, and other claims requiring a carefully developed defense.
His work includes examining the governing agreement, evaluating the evidence supporting the claimed damages, and identifying procedural or substantive issues that may affect the outcome.
Whether representing a claimant or a defendant, Christopher considers both the legal merits and the practical consequences. The amount at stake, the expense of further proceedings, the available evidence, and the client’s objectives all matter when deciding whether to negotiate, mediate, arbitrate, or proceed toward trial.
Veterans’ Advocacy
Christopher is a VA-accredited attorney and is admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims.
As the son of a veteran with a 100-percent service-connected disability, he brings a personal connection to his work assisting veterans. He understands that a disability claim can affect a veteran’s financial security, access to care, and family.
His commitment to the veterans’ community also extends beyond legal representation, including support for injured-veteran benefit events.
Direct Representation and Practical Judgment
Christopher’s background spans both sides of civil litigation, serious criminal defense, trial work, appeals, arbitration, and mediation. Today, he applies that experience primarily on behalf of injured people and their families, while continuing to accept selected defense matters.
Clients work directly with an attorney who understands that legal problems carry consequences beyond the case file. Whether a matter concerns a serious injury, a family’s living conditions, a disputed contract, or veterans’ benefits, his focus is on understanding the facts, preparing the case, and pursuing an outcome consistent with the client’s needs and goals.
A Personal Approach to Litigation
DortLaw is intentionally structured as a small law practice.
Clients work directly with an experienced attorney rather than being passed through a large organization. Cases are evaluated individually, with attention to the facts, the available evidence, applicable law, potential damages, and the practical options for achieving a favorable resolution.
When a matter requires additional resources, the office may work with qualified experts, investigators, consultants, and associated attorneys.
The objective is to provide the capabilities needed for serious litigation while preserving the accessibility and personal attention of a smaller practice.
Serious Cases Deserve Careful Preparation
Many civil disputes begin with an insurance claim, a denial of responsibility, or a disagreement over the extent of an injury or loss.
Successful litigation requires more than simply submitting a demand and waiting for an offer.
It may require detailed investigation, medical and technical evidence, expert consultation, formal discovery, depositions, motion practice, and preparation for trial.
DortLaw approaches litigation with an emphasis on understanding the evidence, identifying the applicable legal obligations, and developing a strategy appropriate to the individual circumstances of each case.
The DortLaw Philosophy
Every case presents different facts, legal questions, risks, and opportunities.
Clients deserve realistic advice, clear communication, and an attorney who takes the time to understand what is important to them.
DortLaw is committed to providing experienced counsel, professional judgment, and personal attention throughout the representation.
Our objective is straightforward: prepare carefully, communicate clearly, and pursue appropriate legal remedies on behalf of the people who place their trust in our office.
